Songs That Send Chills . . .

I’ve been wanting to write this blog for awhile now, and every time I seem to get pulled away on something more important. Well, I FINALLY have the time today.

As a musician, I always look for those songs that strike a chord that resonates within. Sometimes, those songs can even bring the feelings of overwhelming emotions. I’m sure you know the kind of song I’m talking about. Sometimes they are the songs that rip your emotions to shreds. I’ve kept a catalog of some of these songs for a while now and wanted to share. For those that have videos, I’ve noted those as well. And as I’m sitting here writing this and watching the videos I’ve found to share, it all hits home…

Here are a few and why I’ve picked them…

Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, by Gordon Lightfoot

This was the first song that I remember feeling that chord, only intensified by that it was about a true story. Even watching the specials on Discovery and History I’ve seen over the years still give chills.

If Everyone Cared, by Nickelback

This was one of those songs from the first time I listened to it, it had an impact. Amazing lyrics and outstanding musical performance. The video added another layer to that with some historical context to reinforce the lyrics.

Numb, by Linkin Park

For Numb, the music caught my attention first as I was driving listening to SiriusXM one day. I paid more attention the next time I heard it and felt it burn through. And seeing the video and the way Chester sings in it, makes it feel all the more real. The irony in this song was my earlier-in-life fixation on Pink Floyd’s Comfortably Numb.

Shatter Me, by Lindsey Stirling featuring Lzzy Hale

Ironically, the first time I heard this was at my daughter’s karate class that they were using in the background. I think they were using one of those ‘dance’ version of the song. The combination of the Lindsey Stirling’s strings and Lzzy Hale’s voice is absolutely amazing.

All Along the Watchtower, by Jimi Hendrix and remade by Bear McCreary

My science fiction addiction found me this song. Ironically, it was the Bear McCreary version used in season 3 of Battlestar Galactica that first caught my attention. Then a couple years later, the Jimi Hendrix version used in The Watchmen reinforced the song for me.

Dig, by Incubus

When I first heard this song, the chorus is what caught my ear. The line that hits home for me is “If I turn into another, dig me up from under what is covering the better part of me…”. At the time, I was going through some things, and this song and the support of a friend made the meaning for me more intense.

Broken, by Seether featuring Amy Lee

I’ve been a fan of Amy Lee for since the first Evanescence song came out, especially songs like My Immortal. The combination with Seether on this song was amazing, especially with the lyrics. [And yes, I prefer the version of the song with Amy Lee than the Seether only version.]

Someday, by Nickelback

I had liked this song from the first time I had heard it. Then going through iTunes, I found the video for the song. It took me a couple times watching this video to get it. Once I got it, it still gives me chills to watch the video.

Here are a couple others as well:

In The End, by Linkin Park

Castle of Glass, by Linkin Park

There are others, but these are some of my better examples. What do you think?

Do you have any that you would share? I look forward to any comments and songs you would share.
