And on the seventh day, God said let there be orangutans.
Actually there were orangs on the fourth day, too, but they were sick and I felt bad for them.
Went to our two hard release camps today. These are for orangs who have been orphaned, injured or in captivity. We rehabilitate them and then release them into the wild but with support (that is we monitor them and provide additional food until they get the hang of things). Pretty amazing. The apes are incredible, even if it is a bit sad to see how domesticated thaey can become.
Also got to see proboscis monkeys, macaques, kingfishers and some other "Hey, we're not in the zoo!" stuff.
On the downside I also got to see the acres of sawmills and logjams that are eating up the habitat like it was salty snacks.
Indonesia factoid: it is apparently never too hot to drink hot tea. This in a country known for its coffee.
