Yeah... I had a long conversation with my dad about this - pretty much the last long conversation we did have - and we concluded that nothing bar (a new) organised religion would actually make any headway; and that even then, it might not be enough.

I think that was in 2006. Nothing has changed, except for the things which have got worse.

Pundits and analysts keep looking for the "big moment" in Obama's inaugural address. In some sense, I think they are missing the point. This was not a time for lofty, ascending rhetoric, and the President knew it. Hell, the event itself would take care of that. No, he was looking ahead, looking to the very difficult job he's been hired to do. His purpose was...

Yesterday I bought a new external hard drive, 750 gigs worth. It occurred to me while setting it up that, about ten years ago, one of my favorite cyberpunk games listed the size of a human personality recording at 100 GB. This is, of course, a ridiculous figure, but I'm sure it sounded big in 1998.

But it did make me wonder, if I did...

I thought a monk's sacrifice of sex brings them closer to God. Not much of a sacrifice if they want to give it up. Then again, I might just be cribbing that line from Disney's The Three Musketeers and be totally off-base here.

Since I'm a photographer, I have several terabytes of pictures of people, does that count?

Thanks for the nice comment on Illryia's newest set Popcorn Sunday.

Stacy's bookstore, a fixture in downtown San Francisco, is closing. I shop there about once a week, and not just because it is located roughly 15 stories beneath my feet. It is one of the best independent bookstores I've had the pleasure to patronize, and it's given me the opportunity to pester my favorite authors on a regular basis, thanks to their excellent events...

Yeah, again with the respiratory illness. I guess there is no doubt about it, my lungs and/or bronchial tubes are seriously sub-par. Two years ago, when I had the Cough of Death, the doctors told me I might be borderline asthmatic, but subsequent tests showed nothing. Think I'm gonna go back for another test.

On the plus side, my New Years' was pretty fantastic -...

I didn't realize how much I needed time off until I took it. Time off to do nothing, absolutely nothing, productive. Just read, play with my pets, spend an afternoon watching the History of the Tsars or episodes of Deadwood. The best part came today - for the first time in about a year, I was able to sleep in; usually my brain wakes me...

Some weeks - scratch that some months - you are better off staying home. Last week it was layoffs. This week, I went to sleep feeling "a little full" and woke up with full blown food poisoning. "Reverse gears!"

Do you think video games have gotten too complicated? Do you think they suck away too much away of your life?

Then this is the game...

You're not alone. I had what I assume was food poisoning a couple months ago. It could have been a stomach bug too. Not sure, only that it messed me up for a couple of days. And, since then. I've had a few mornings were I'd need to throw up. Something I never did growing up. Trying to stay away from eating things like meat and sweats after 6pm.
This has been the year of ill health for us all.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

The company cut my team in half yesterday. No, I was not fired, although it would be wrong to say I was not affected. Two key members of my group have been laid off, and my company is slashing employees everywhere. I honestly don't know how this outfit is supposed to function going forward.

"Sir, we're losing altitude!"

"Quick, dump all the fuel to save...
