Last night, I helped clean up the house of my girlfriend's long lost great uncle. The guy has been living as a kind of urban hermit in this house for the past thirty years, refusing all contact with his relatives, but now he is getting old enough that he needs the family's help.

It seems the old guy never threw away a single piece of...

Bush's latest ad:

"...George W. Bush provided steady leadership..."

Yeah, steady. Like the Titanic, just before it hit the iceberg.

Okay, at the risk of sounding juvenille, I would like to mention that the local news guy for KRON 4 repeatedly used the phrase "erection results" during their primary coverage last night. This clearly flustered the rest of the news crew; they kept looking off camera with this "would somebody please tell him?" look.

Got to (briefly) meet Chuck Palahniuk this weekend, at a writer's symposium at the Academy of Art college in San Francisco. The conference was about building believable worlds in fiction, and it was fairly interesting.

The funniest thing for me was listening to the panel talk about fairly standard topics, and then they would go to Palaniuk, and he'd say something like: "I get my...

re: the liberty council...... as long as it's not the justice league, or the super friends......

Damn, that must be it - we're in Bizarro World.

I find it simultaneously disturbing and amusing that one of the plaintiffs suing over San Francisco's gay marriages is called "The Liberty Council."

Considering that this group seems wholeheartedly dedicated to denying their fellow citizens of liberty.

I'm sorry. I know I'm supposed to think they are fantastic, but I just can't take The Darkness (the band) seriously. Yes, it's the falsetto. I know, I know, it's totally unfair of me.

But everytime I hear that song, all I can think of is Curly from the Three Stooges, singing to himself.

Unpleasant side effect of our current economy: a customer told me today that he knows he's being unreasonably demanding, but he figures we have to go out of our way to accomodate him anyway, because the job market is so crappy, where else are we going to go? This was all said in that passive aggressive "I'm joking but really I'm not joking" way.

hello.
you have a good most humbling moment.

I just read your post on the sci fi group anti-bias thread, about how people would make thinnly veriled comments about what a shame it is you weren't writing "serious " stuff...
It always blows me away that the people writing the thinnly veiled confessional memoirs don't realize that half the crap in there is just the stories we tell ourselves, the lies we tell ourselves.

I took one fiction writing class in college, and I should ahve dropped it when I realized the teacher was ashamed of the young adult fiction she had written since it was "genre" fiction.

The only thing sillier to me than writers/literary types being snide about genre fiction is people within one genre being snide about other sub-genres. E.G. Sci-Fi folks being derogatory about fantasy or people who play Magic:the gathering making fun of RPG games.... etc.
redheadedleague:
Exactly. The literary community - mostly low-paid, bitter academics - is one of the meanest, snootiest cliques you will ever find, and it has crushed many aspiring writers who "didn't fit in."
