I watched the Superbowl tonight. In addition to being the only NFL game I watch all year I always find it a fascinating presentation of American culture. It always comes across as a: "hey, world, this is what America is all about". I.E.: giant, glitzy, glamorous spectacles featuring rich people, that middle class people watch forget about their miserable existence.

Featuring:

The US Military!
A team called the "Patriots"
Pop stars!
Lots of black people! Hey, we're tolerant now!
Flags. Anthems. Flag waving. Statue of Liberty.
Ex-Presidents! (aka, nobility)
Oh, a game of FOOTBALL!!! (ala John Madden ala Family Guy)
Paul McCartney*...er, 'Sir' Paul McCartney
A feature on the Declaration of Independence like it still means something.

* Paul's performance was great, I thought, just incredibly ironic. "Hey Jude" was being performed while the Statue of Liberty was proudly displayed on the video-screen-runways. He's like, British. You know? That country that about two hours ago you were proudly talking about seceeding from? He's also like, you know, anti-establishment. Or was. To find integrity and star talent to make up for the Jackson gaffe...they brought in an ex-hippy foreigner. Fantastic. Couldn't find any wholesome integrity in your local cultural scene? Shocking.

Oh, and lest we forget, the time honored tradition of watching commercials. What a fucking genius management decision that was: make the commercials part of the spectacle. Then people will REALLY watch them.

And buy our products.

Consume! Consume! You will be happy! Here's a beautiful pop star you can live vicariously through!

I welcome a lively debate.

Also the commercials this year sucked ass, they might have been okay but the censors cut out like twenty commericals because of the Janet thing last years they didn't want any controversy. Although the commerical where the bird bitch slapped that guy who was hitting on that chick was funny as hell.
