Two friends got married yesterday. The service was beautiful but the best part was the mariachi band that played as we exited the church. Lots of fun. That really set the tone for the reception, which was held at one of my favorite places, The Tabard Inn.

I have a long history with this place which is only a few blocks from my old apartment. It's a funky hotel with a great restaurant and this lounge:

Which was the starting point for my "F.Scott and Zelda Nights". These were roving parties with the following rules:

1) As soon as someone is bored, we move to a new location.
2) One must not physically hurt anyone on F.Scott and Zelda Night (unless they want it, wink)
3) You cannot hold against anyone, anything that happens on F.Scott and Zelda Night
4) There are no other rules, let loose and have fun.

The parties were inspired, of course by the lost generation, with whom I have an abiding fascination. They lived life with the idea that god was dead (must be dead otherwise how can one explain the horrors of World War I) and so what is the meaning of life? Let's find out through experience and not rote philosophy. They drank, they danced, they seduced and were seduced, and of course they fucked, and made love and fell in love and felt pain and felt nothing. They were rudderless and rolled from thrill to spill and body to sick bed and in the end it's not clear that any of them found the answer to the unasked question. But they tried. in a world in which morality seemed to mean little, they existed and pushed their boundaries, sometimes naively and sometimes with purpose. But they had adventures and what adventures!?

Our own F.Scott and Zelda Nights were full of adventures and fun. They served their purpose as well, allowing my friends in DC to let go of their daily constraints and have fun as if there was no tomorrow.

It looks as though I may be resurrecting F. Scott and Zelda Nights and that makes me very happy.
