May 18 marks the 45th anniversary of the catastrophic eruption of Mount St. Helens

I remember this all too well. I was in the backyard mowing that morning. Then I thought what was coming down was some very odd snow. But quickly realized it was ash and a lot of it. I only breathed in a small amount, but it sure made me cough up a lot of crap. Then went rushing in to the house and learned of what was happening. All that smoke and ash, water that looked like a milkshake and those folks that didn't make it out. The old dude that stood his ground by not leaving prior, to live and die on his homestead (I still admire that dude). I still have a jar of the ash that I have saved all these years.

I can say we didn't freak out, not like folks would do today. Everyone was sad but had the courage to take care of each other and help where they could. We stood by each other.
