They don't give out awards for getting up every day and going to work. They don't throw parties or hand out prizes to parents for making sure their children have a roof over their head and food to eat. The world does not owe you anything because you made it to 80, we all age it's a fact of life.
What sets you apart from others is what you do on top of what is necessary just to get by. If you put the minimum into a job, relationships, or anything else you do in life you can't expect people to shower you with accolades and you surely can't expect to get anything but mediocrity back. Sure we should all care about the fate of our fellow humans in the general sense but to give so little and expect respect and admiration in return is just ignorant.
The people we admire and respect are the people who are giving twice as much as they get even when the chips are down. They stay late at work, they go above and beyond to help you when your down, they spend extra time at their kids school and in the community... they give more than is expected of them.
We could argue the semantics of selfish acts vs selfless but in either case the result is still the same. Whether your doing it for yourself or for others is not as important as what it is you are doing to enrich your life and the lives of the people around you.
You can always be a better human being and that is true for everyone from Bill Gates down to the lowliest person. Don't expect people to hand you the keys to the city because you showed up to the game, show up and own it like you'll never live another day and be proud of yourself no matter what the outcome. The fact is you gave it all you got and nobody can do any better than that.

Well, things have been better, the last couple of months have been really difficult for me. My boyfriend lsot his job, I have barely been supporting us (he just now got a new one)...we barely made our rent, bills piling up....holiday madness, my dad getting sick, my bf's ex now suing for custody (even though she has never given a damn about his daughter)...it's been constant stress, and I am in the job-hunt mode and need to find one asap....
