I'm a bit of a fan of Tom Robbins.  If you ever saw the movie "even cowgirls get the blues" he was the author of the book.   The man has a way of making absurd things happening in his books seem totally plausible.  A journey being had by a can of beans a stick  and a few other items are side shoots of the main story but fit completely on with the narrative in his book "Skinny Legs And All".  I would have to say very much worth reading.
