I've not been around here lately, I've been too busy living my life lately to stop and take stock of where exactly I am, or where I am going.
So, today I bought a little server for my little house. A HP Proliant MicroServer, a miniature version of the kit I use at work every day. It's kinda cute, and does a great job of being a NAS box with an OS if nothing else. At under 150 it's a steal.
I test software for a living now. Yay for not speaking to our customers any more! They may ultimately pay my bills but there's only so many times you can explain how a simple piece of software works before you realise a part inside you is dying.

Servers? I won't say who I work for but they like to think of themselves as a big firm in Telecoms yet a couple of weeks ago we were racing against the clock to book our final figures for the balance sheet while the servers were shutting down one by one after the air conditioning at the site failed then a couple of days later we had no LAN for hours because one of the folk repairing the air conditioning pulled out power cables for the servers by accident. We're even having to get a specific sign-off from our senior manager in order to get a handful of us upgraded from Excel 2003 to Excel 2007. Imagine that - the joy of having one piece of software that is less than 5 years old!
