Id better stop actually doing things for a minute or two so I can write about them a bit.
So my buddy was out here in the middle of nowhere just to visit me because I am, in fact, that cool. We did Chicago stuff, and pohdunk stuff and caught up on indy films, etc.
When it came time for him to go back home, I decided id join him and we protested and rallied our asses off in New York.
It was hot. Very, very hot. And Ive blisters and a sunburn to show for it.
When not amid the throngs of politicaly and socially aware baking on the city streets, we caught the tail end of the Fringe Festival, and a few movies and plays that were part of the Imagine festival. Included therein was a Q & A with Robert Altman (way fucking rad) after a screening of his film "Secret Honor" which he reckons about 2000 people total have seen since its first release twenty years ago.
I also caught a screening of the controversial "This Aint No Heartland" which exploits unsuspecting...um...salt of the earth folk from the midwest by getting them to incorectly answer questions about the war in Iraq and well, geography. The point of the movie is that disinformation coupled with war breeds patriotism. However, by concentrating on simple midwestern folk he made himself the target of various accusations from laziness to prejudice to ignorance.
Anyway, the highlight was the Dan Bern concert. Word of warning, if you ever go see a show at Joes Pub, be sure you order your tickets by phone so that you can reserve a table. Standing sucks, and the website doesnt mention tables at all. Anywho, if you dont know Dan Bern he is a funny folksinger-type who puts on a very good show. We stayed afterwards for another drink, and went for a piss before heading out. On the way downstairs from the bathroom (which is backstage) I became a 6'2" 190lb fourteen year old girl.
We chatted with Dan for about half an hour, during which time I returned to being just your average drunk guy who likes to chat about music and politics. That was pretty right on, especially because he seemed to be the same. I told him Id see him in chicago when he comes back here and now I feel sort of obligated. Rad.
Anywho, so, since being home I have gone out on two, yes, count them, two dates with a girl whose boyfriend, I just found out, a)exists, and b)is just away to school. Not the brightest of moves for a pacifist
Anyway, I'll keep you all updated on that, should my membership not die on me. Do they send you warnings?
