since feeling is first
who pays any attention
to the syntax of things
will never wholly kiss you;

wholly to be a fool
while Spring is in the world

my blood approves,
and kisses are a better fate
than wisdom
lady i swear by all flowers. Don't cry
- the best gesture of my brain is less than
your eyelids' flutter which says

we are...

I will send you a poem.

Just as soon as it magically jumps from the poem computer to the internet computer.

Or I get my lazy ass in gear and save it to a floppy.

Not sure which is gonna happen first, but you're good incentive. smile smile smile

Do you read any Federico Garcia Lorca? He is one of my favorites.

Emily's Theme

My dear trees, I no longer recognize you
In that wintry light.
You brought me a reminder I can do without:
The world is old, it was always old,
There's nothing new in it this afternoon.
The garden could've been a padlocked window
Of a pawnshop I was studying
With every item in it dust-covered.

Each one of my thoughts was being ghostwritten...

Before

Before you were you
before your bicycle appeared under the street-lamp,
before you met me at the airport in a corduroy jacket,

before you agreed to hold my five ballpoint pens
while I ran to play touch football,
before your wet hair nearly touched the piano keys

and in advance of how your raincoat was tightly cinched
when you asked about nonviolent anti-war activity...

Finally I'm back! How are you?? smile

Oh no, I totally forgot about that show tonight! I hope you have fun. I'll be down in Wicker Park makin' out with a cute girl (maybe. hopefully.) Enjoy Chicago. Give me a bell if you feel up to it.
Oh, and oddly enough, I've never been to Schuba's. But I think it's supposed to be pretty chill. This one chick singer that I really like a lot plays there occasioanlly but I've never managed to be in the right place at the right time.

Cut

What a thrill -
My thumb instead of an onion.
The top quite gone
Except for a sort of a hinge

Of skin,
A flap like a hat,
Dead white.
Then that red plush.

Little pilgrim,
The Indian's axed your scalp.
Your turkey wattle
Carpet rolls

Straight from the heart.
I step on it,
Clutching my bottle
Of pink fizz.

A celebration, this is....

not that I doubt you are a very talented boy...but I was somewhat relieved to see that you didn't write that. Otherwise I would have been extremely intimidated. I've had a big book of Plath's collected poetry on my bookshelf since...oh...fall of 02 and haven't cracked it. Bad girl.
signalnoise:
that poem really grossed me out - b/c blood really freaks me out. and i hate cutting things in the kitchen, so my wife does all the knife work usually b/c i'm sure i'll hurt myself.
i'm sure the poem has some deeper meaning, but i couldn't get past the blood (the blood! - now i'm like that guy on 'fantasy island' ... 'da plane! da plane!' - hehehe)

anyway. that was rambly. glad that my entry in the phil. group wasn't TOTALLY annoying. but did it seem intimidating? i hope not. there's not much here to intimidate really ... i mostly have no clue what i'm talking about smile

Sorry for the long wait for a response, but I bought Good News For People Who Love Bad News (which is fantastic), and The Lonesome Crowded West (which I haven't actually listened to properly yet).

Lost Luggage

Perhaps I am to blame.
But there were good times, too,
before the tears and careful stitching.

Remember Chicago? Snowed in,
my hands searching your pockets,
your arms slung over my shoulder, keeping you close.

I've heard of this sort of thing
but never expected it to happen to me.
While I sit waiting, checking the door,

you're spread across a table

Number one sign you are getting old?

You catch yourself thinking: kids today and their #$%& (in this case, rap) music!

"Look at me now. Remember how you gave me shit and I made lemonade out of it? Pass me the sugar and things will be fine"

Ah, a little Tsunami Bomb to clense the palate....

I agree that Hitchens is good at arguing, which is much of what I was getting at. However, I don't think he has much ability to argue for something. He lacks vision now. I think he broke from a tradition rich in hope and inspiration, a tradition which provides a sound basis for a commitment to social justice. Needless to say, his writing is a little hollow and crippled after that.

I think Libertarians are pretty misguided in their economic views, but I tend to respect them for being intelligent individuals. They are opposed to big government and usually socially liberal, so we agree on a few things. I don't agree with some of the analyses they offer (Marxism as big government, etc.). Still, I hope that they maintain some vitality as a political movement - their interest lies in opposing the two party system and they might be able to help break the political deadlock in which we find ourselves.

Note: I think it is more acurately a one-party system. I am thinking of the November elections as a second round of primaries. Yep, you can quote me on that. The differences between the Republicans and the Democrats are smaller than the differences between Bukharin's wing of the Bolsheviks and Trotsky's, for instance...
redbstrd:
Yeah, Bush is pretty scary. I agree that there are some differences, which are the basis by which I am going to vote. On some AOL candidate test, I scored 95% compatible with Kerry, 6% with Bush. They didn't ask the right questions obviously, or my Kerry-affinity would have been lower. "Do you think your country should be ruled by one of two insanely rich men who caters to the class interests of the grand bourgeoisie?," for instance, would have lowered it.

Still, it isn't as wide of a gap between the candidates as I would like. Much of it is rhetorical. Bush advocates some pretty crazy laws and defends some pretty crazy policies though.

I would have voted Socialist as a protest vote to send a message that the Left is not happy with the two choices. Unfortunately, the votes are counted here, as the Socialists are not certified as a write-in in this state. That means I vote for the guy who wants to get rid of the Patriot Act...

"No, not me. I'm an island of such great complexity."

You wouldnt recognize me now, I am incognito. I am the Clark Kent to my own Superman. I done got me some glasses.

Unfortunately, contacts were too expensive and I was getting tired of my dinosaur experiment, only being able to see color and movement.

Y'know, that reminds me, in the final scenes of Kill...

In short, I think Hitchens is good at attacking things, but he lacks much of a positive programme.

I love "the Peoples' History of the United States" by Zinn. My favorite book by him is "Declarations of Independence." I am a dual major (History and Philosophy), so I read a lot of History books. I focus on Europe (Eastern in particular) and then on Asia (China), so I am not as well read in American History. Zinn is one of the exceptions though. I have a lot of the man's books.

Glad you approve! biggrin

I may turn it into a .gif file so it flashes several different things.
