I ran over a racoon this morning on my way to work. There were cars and large ditches around me so I had no chance to swerv. I pulled over and ran towards it in case it was still alive (i'm not going to leave the poor thing to die by itself) Well...it was clearly not in pain at all and had died on impact.
So sad; it's wrecked my whole day.

This has happened to me as well. A few years ago I killed 2 racoons, that I did not see until I was right on them. It was dark and I was driving in a lonely highway, probably too fast. I still think about them every once in a while.

In your case at least he went fast!
