So I'm sitting here watching Ana Nicole. Still not sure what to think of her. Her show isn't exactly what you'd call high art, but I think her mere presence on television is a breakthrough for the modern free world.

I just got back from this place called "Bridges," a very hip pool hall with a bar, restaurant lounge area, and dance floor. A DJ was mixing a ton of eighties rock and pop for our listening pleasure. I had fun, although nobody who said they were going to show up arrived on time, and I had to leave right as people started coming in. I wanted to stick around, but my head was swimming from the cigarette smoke. Which leads me to ask, why do so many people smoke? I don't personally smoke anything besides the occasional hukka because I have asthma, I like the idea of keeping my teeth white, smoking is a costly habit, and most importantly---I don't want to die.

After being at the bar/pool hall for a little over an hour, I had to bathe with heavy perfumes, wash my hair twice, and put my coat in the washer. The purse needs febreezing, and the smoke still lingers in my nostrils. Its pretty nasty. I mean, I know nicotine is relaxing for some people. I know for my friend Laura, it's even a medical necessity (it's proven to help prevent epileptic seizures). But most of the population doesn't HAVE to smoke for medical reasons. It kind of annoys me that I can't go anywhere "fun" for very long because I get choked up. If I go to Jaxx or any of the cool music clubs around here, and I decide to stay for a couple of sets, I wake up the next morning with a sinus infection that lingers for days on end. And it sucks, because all my friends are "starving artists" and its like they HAVE to have cigarettes and dress all in black just to match the stereotype society has given them. But seriously, why smoke?

Excuse me while I go get my inhaler....my apologies to my friends for not having tougher lungs....

I'm reminded of this one time Ted and I visited a then good friend of ours. She decided to invite other people over, and they made the decision to cram on the deck and smoke a few cigarettes. Two hours of chain smoking later, Ted and I had to leave. Jenny knew that we were both really allergic to the smoke and she apologized a number of times, but that didn't keep her from repeatedly lighting up. I think it's only polite that if you invite asthmatics to a party, you don't spend the whole time ignoring them and smoking in their faces. We didn't want to appear aloof, but seriously---enough was enough. At least my friend Laura is considerate enough to blow away from my face, and if possible, keep the smoking down to a minimum. I don't expect consideration from other guests, but I do from the fucking host. frown Nobody loves me because I don't smoke.
