Sick of it all? Got a lot of time on your hands and money to burn?

Check out skull How to Destroy the Earth skull , my go-to site to beat the blues.

the Preamble:

Destroying the Earth is harder than you may have been led to believe.

You've seen the action movies where the bad guy threatens to destroy the Earth. You've heard people on the...

I really enjoy giving money away.

Today, I made my first donation to LEAP, Law Enforcement Against Prohibition.

From their Mission Statement:

Founded on March 16, 2002, LEAP is made up of current and former members of law enforcement who believe the existing drug policies have failed in their intended goals of addressing the problems of crime, drug abuse, addiction, juvenile drug use, stopping...

Supporting good causes is a critical element of active citizenship. I think it is grand!

LEAP is a very fine organization if you ask me. You rock. smile

Politics sucks. I won't stop voting, though, so I have to keep up with it.

Researchers showed students photos of candidates in a very well designed study (abstract). Based on their choices from the photos alone, they predicted the outcomes of the elections with about 70% accuracy.

Asking participants to deliberate and make a good judgment dramatically increased the response times and reduced...

I think that, for most people, the attraction of politics is that it is a bit like a soap opera. Hence, political debate comes more and more to resemble a bar room debate about who did what in Eastenders or Neighbours. It seems to me that much of the political debate on the boards these days resembles a celebrity gossip column. People are more interested in discussing the personalities of individual US politicians and the latest scandalous and politically incorrect remark to be made by a politician. Meanwhile Russia and the US are arguing about whether the US will site missile defense components in Poland and Vladimir Putin is talking about pointing missiles at Europe in retaliation.

I learned a new word yesterday: neurogamy, a marriage of nervous systems.

As I drove to my VFD training, I listened to this interview with Oliver Sacks, Clinical Professor of Neurology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, author of The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat

When I remebered it this morning, I found this article.

Anthony Storr, in his excellent book...

oh dont worry,i wasnt offended, i dont usually get offended by others, theres no point. the thing is, although i'm the model and i do come up with most of my poses and just have fun with it, i also listen to what the photographer has to say,and their opinions of what i should do. so if she says turn around and hold up your hair or something like that, i just trust her that she knows what shes doing i guess. but i like the feedback, and im not offended i promise!

Thanks, I am feeling better by now. The flight was just an hour long so I don't think that was what made me sick but probably contributed.
I am addicted to nasal spray! I've been using that for like 10 years, just started using the saline version recently but I still use the Vicks one on a daily basis surreal It's worse than crack!
Thanks for the compliment on my cat, I am a proud mommy.

The internet journal thing became the blog thing and it all just passed me by. I clicked on lots of blogs this morning, and I see what I missed.

Crikey, I have a lot of catching up to do.

Gracias! Last night was actually pretty fun: two friends had screenings of their new movies and though we (me + date) could only make one movie, we hit both afterparties and had a good time.

Strangely, although I do get these kind of invites (hard not to, what with living here and doing what I do and stuff) I almost never make the effort to go out and DO this sort of thing. The hassle factor usually keeps me locked safely in my hermitage entertaining myself or a friend or two.

Is "sociable loner" an accepted construct? Hey: if not, then I'm MAKING it one. tongue

Hi, thanks for stopping by!

Yeah, I think math is an awesome foundation for developing the analytical, philosophical and practical skills needed for modern-day mysticism. Of course, math is also incredibly freakin' beautiful, but, sadly, as you mentioned, so many people never learn to truly appreciate it. biggrin

Ah fall, the time of year when wasps attempt to invade my home. One day, I killed twelve before coffee.

I just got back from a trip to the ancestral lands. My great-grandfather owned a ranch near Fort Worth, and my Mom and I have started taking semi-annual trips to visit it. The guy who leases it amazes me. We went several years ago when...

I have no friends here. Well, I have one and the best explanation I have is that my hinky mouse jumped when I tried to click on something else (I know not what)... I liked her set okay, and when she suddenly appeared as my friend I thought it would be rude to unfriend her...

Don't pity me, please. I entirely accept that I don't...

Work has sucked the last few weeks. I have nothing much to do, so I spend my time on discussion boards here and elsewhere. My boss basically knows this and knows I'd prefer to be honing my skills and making money for the firm, but I guess he's having motivational problems.

I delight in the fact that every time I get a new task, I...

Cool kit. I used to play drums a little but am - or again, was - more of a guitarist ultimately.

Good chatting near you on the boards, mate. Cheers. smile

Thank you - I appreciate it. I always consider being more active on the boards, but generally they are rather more out of control than I prefer before I get to them. I generally let the situation alone and figure I've aged out of the target demographic anyway, so let things be what they are here. This, however, was too much. I feel pretty creepy around here anyway, but I have nostalgia for what I used to think it was, and so here I am. Fairly week as a position, really ... anyway. I meant to say hi and thanks and I'm rambling.

Nice drums! smile

I broke an 20-year streak the other day.

I wanted to grab something from Grandy's for breakfast on my way in to work. I hadn't been to the one here in town, yet, and I missed the entrance without noticing. After I ordered, I realized that I was at Burger King. I haven't eaten anything from BK or McD's since 1987, when I flagrantly violated...

I worked more hours during the second half of this month than I have all year. I appreciate this for the money I have earned, but also for other reasons:

1. I billed more hours. I earned quite a bit of money for the firm, even if some of the people who wanted our assistance have no gratitude when the bills arrive next week.

2....

I like the idea of helping people improve their lives. Sadly, good intentions often go awry, and charity often does more harm than good. If you have experienced this bit of cognitive dissonance, I suggest you consider the good work done by micro-lending. Small loans to impoverished people from legitimate institutions (rather than shylocks) can help them improve their own lives in whatever way...
