A truly amazing book which adds considerable perspective to the current War in Iraq is The Shia Revival by Vali Nasr. It deals with the history of the split between the Sunni and Shi'a sects of Islam and how the Shi'a developed the mindset they have today. The book also takes this into modern times, explaining the implications of modern events, most notably the Iranian Revolution and the Iraq Invasion, have on the future of Islam.
A great book, very accessible. I recommend it to anyone who actually wants to learn about what's going on in that part of the world. In addition, if you want to learn about what's going on over hear, the first thing you do is turn of your fucking television.
