Yesterday, I had the most bizarre thing happen to me. I'm watching the Canucks game with a group of friends when the unthinkable happens. With less then half a minute left I proclaim that the Canucks are finished, them being down 2 to 1. In an attempt to emphasize how defeated we are I offer to give my friend, who is sure we're coming back, 100 to 1 odds vs the Flames. As to be expected, he wants to take me up on that bet with a dollar at stake. Unfortunately, it's not worth my while to risk losing $100 for a single dollar so I raise the stakes, and say he has to bet at least $5 if anything at all. Boy that was a smooth move! Apparently fate doesn't take kindly to being tempted because, sure enough...
with 5 seconds left we score a goal, tying the game and sending it into sudden-death overtime. Forced to cheer against my home team I was not very happy, to say the least. Now, at this point I'm kicking myself for being an idiot and praying to a God I don't believe in which is pretty funny because I confide in this presumed God that, in spite the fact that I will deny ever praying to him and will immediately go about my atheism should he come through, I need his help. Anyways, either I got lucky or "god" came through because no sooner then I had unclasped my hands and raised my head, Calgary scores an ugly goal to send the Canucks packing. After a few loud taunts to celebrate my immense relief, it was over. The tension in the air, which had been as thick as one can imagine with $500 at stake, was finally released.
So what did I learn from this experience? Well, aside from the fact that one ought not bet more then they are willing to lose, I learnt never to put my money where my mouth is because I have a big mouth.
Heh, no I'm joking, though that's not an inconceivable moral of our little story. Actually, I maintain that betting vs one's team is the way to go, just don't offer odds. The reasoning behind that is quite simply: if my team wins, then I win, and if my team loses, then I win some money and don't feel so bad about my team's defeat. Mind you, this works considerably better with small sums. Just calculate how much it's worth to you to see your team advance, and bet that much vs them.
In other news, I don't think I'm going to be able to go to Coachella anymore, though I will undoubtedly substitute some other road-trip for it. Also, I'm helping put together a campaign to educate and raise awareness about date-rape drugs in the Vancouver nightlife scene. It's not my project but I'm as involved as I can be and I should, by mid-summer, hopefully, be promoting out in the scene. Right now we just need sponsorship to fund the cost of producing the pamphlets and ads. With any luck, it will all go well.
In closing i would like to request some muzak, in the form of suggestions from you folks. Some of you are better at this then other, you know who you are. Also, I am at a loss for what to do with my cat when I travel at the end of May. Someone told me about some service that comes over and feeds/plays with your cat while you're away but, for the life of me, I can't recollect what it was called. If this rings a bell, let me know. Anyways, stay cool kiddos.
