Study: Zebra Mussels Promote Algae Growth
PONTIAC, Mich. - A new study has found that the presence of zebra mussels in inland lakes promotes the growth of a blue-green algae that produces a toxin harmful to people and animals.
The study, conducted by researchers from Michigan State University's Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, found that lakes infested with zebra mussels have, on average, levels of a blue-green algae called Microcystis three times higher than lakes without the mussels. The infested lakes also have about twice the level of microcystins poisons produced by the algae.

Bush administration ordered Medicare plan cost estimates withheld
WASHINGTON - The government's top expert on Medicare costs was warned that he would be fired if he told key lawmakers about a series of Bush administration cost estimates that could have torpedoed congressional passage of the White House-backed Medicare prescription-drug plan.
When the House of Representatives passed the controversial benefit by five votes last November, the White House was embracing an estimate by the Congressional Budget Office that it would cost $395 billion in the first 10 years. But for months the administration's own analysts in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services had concluded repeatedly that the drug benefit could cost upward of $100 billion more than that.

Bush Highlights Agenda for Christians
WASHINGTON (AP) - President Bush told evangelical Christians what they wanted to hear Thursday, ticking off highlights of his ``compassionate conservative'' agenda, from halting late-term abortions to banning gay marriage.
``We're working to build a culture of life,'' he said, noting that he had taken ``an important step'' last November when he signed legislation outlawing certain late-term abortions.
Three federal judges immediately blocked the law, and Bush promised that, ``We will vigorously defend this law against any attempt to overturn it in the courts.''
However, Bush's Justice Department this week backed off its effort to subpoena abortion records from six Planned Parenthood affiliates as part of the government's defense of the new law.

EPA Studies Chemicals From Popcorn Bags
Exposure to vapors from butter flavoring in microwave popcorn has been linked to a rare lung disease contracted by factory workers in Missouri, Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has said it suspects the chemical diacetyl caused the illnesses.
Thirty former workers at the Jasper plant have suing two butter flavoring manufacturers.
The Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association based in Washington, D.C., said the flavor ingredients in microwave popcorn pose no threat to consumers.
