I've been meaning to keep a journal anyway.

So i think I'll make this a tech journal ...

I run mac Systems for 4 groups in Missoula MT. The School of Journalism, CSFN (a pharmacy research group), The Montana Kaimin (school newspaper) and the Missoula Independent (our weekly).

During this break i've been moving my 10.2 servers to 10.3. That's also a shift from netinfo to Opend Directory 2 (apple's kerberized ldap, much like Active Directory, only open source).

Things to know about the upgrade ...
1. 10.3.2 can kill mail services 10.3.2 Killed My Mail

2. Moving from NetInfo to OD2 is a bitch ...
a. Make sure your absolute path to your homedirectories is no more than 89 characters. I had to switch from /private/var/automount/Network/Servers/jserve/Volumes/space/sharepoints/studentfolders

to

/private/var/automount/Network/Servers/jserve.jour.umt.edu/Volumes/space/studentfolders

I can't begin to tell you how pissed I am to have to change folders on a server for no good reason.

b. Remove your automounts from your netinfo BEFORE you migrate your netinfo. I have no idea why, but recreating them in your ldap seems to work much better.

c. you'll probably have to kill your served netinfo from the command line
sudo nidomain -d network
Make sure your OD Master is happy before even thinking about this!

d. There's no way to move a OD Replica into OD Master service
