i bought a book yesterday who's main idea happens to be the salient and suprising position that laziness is actually good for you. i was immediately and irrevocably enchanted as well as suddenly $14 lighter.

turns out, among other things, the authors are both MDs who are 'reformed' marathon runners.

one point which had a hand in my quick snatching and running of this rather off the wall scribbling was this:

[paraphrased]--- 'it is generally held as as gospel that vigorous exercise like, say, spending and hour a day four days a week on the treadmill will add 2 to 3 years to your life. if you believe this, and do actually spend 4 hours a week for 20 years just live a few years longer BUT you don't particularly enjoy running on a treadmill.....you will have ended up wasting 3 to 4 years of your life doing something you didn't want to do in the first place so you could live an extra 3 to 4 years as a senior citizen."

convoluted logic, and i'm sure they put it a bit more succinctly, but thats the gist. it was an epiphany to me, to say the least, because i fucking hate treadmills, stairmasters, cross country ski machines, and that fucking dwarfish, makeup wearing, annoying, long haired guy thats always on TV yammering away about that ridiculous Gazelle contraption. if i ever met that guy i'd kick his ass, then tea-bag him as he lay on the asphalt unconscious and dreaming about that fucking thing.

anyway, the book goes on to relate that recent studies have shown biological things have a finite amount of energy to burn, and how you burn it over the course of your life determines your life span. its sort of like the NASCAR analogy. you have this top notch, souped up machine that can go so fast it blows your nose hairs out of your ears as it goes by, but the engine is dead after a 150 mile race because it is used so damn hard.

and, my favorite was the part where they said sleeping late makes you live longer. yay.

lesson? slow down, enjoy life, do things that make you happy. avoid things that cause you stress. eat right, but don't stress about it all the time. have more sex. live in warmer climates (the body expends energy trying to keep your ass warm). i'm still reading, so i'll drop more pearls of wisdom later.

now i'm just waiting for a book to come out touting the benefits of having sex with as many people as possible makes us better all around human beings. oh wait, that was the 60s and before my time. Doh!
