75 years ago, Japan bombed the US Naval Base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, bringing the US fully into World War II. Remember the heroes who fought and died there.
The dastardly sneak attack was devised by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, based loosely upon American air power pioneer General Billy Mitchell, caught the US Navy unprepared. Tactically brilliant.
So it is perhaps appropriate that Jimmy Doolittle's Tokyo Raiders flew the Mitchell bombers. While physical damage was minimal, the damage done to the Japanese myth of superiority was severe. Bombing was something that happened to other people. Japan was soon to discover otherwise.
Again, tactically, brilliant. Strategically, one of the biggest blunders in history.
