Ralph Nader said we should get rid of political parties. I didn't hear anything else he said on the subject matter, but it was enough to stimulate some thinking in my brain.

You know how a coach has to defend his players even when they do stupid things because well... just because he's on their team? Political parties are the same way too. Republicans will defend other rep's just because they're in the same party, and the same goes for democrats. It's all a bunch of nonsense.

Why do we need political parties? Why can't a candidate just say here... this is what I believe in, instead of having to fall into some general category of republican or democrat and represent what the party believes rather than what he believes. By putting a label on the candidates is what limits our choices to only 2 people. It makes people afraid to vote outside the traditional parties because there's no chance of anyone else winning. Just think... if nobody was aligned with any parties, then people would actually have to use their minds and vote for who they thought was best rather than just voting along party lines. What a concept!
