I got my first job when I was 16. It was at a restaurant called Shoney's and it was a nightmare. I was in 10th grade at the time. I went in to speak with the manager about working there and one lady had him come out to talk. I sat in a booth and across from me was an obese greasy looking 40 something year old with his mouth hanging open the whole time, staring into space, not paying any attention kind of guy. He was the manager....great. So while I'm saying a little bit about myself and my skills, he's staring away. All he did was ask if I was nervous. No. So I left and within the week I came back and there was a new manager already. He was so awesome. His name was David and he asked if I could come in the next day (Saturday) at 8am. Now I'm not a morning person at all. I'm barely alive at that time, but I took it because I really wanted to work. So I go in, watch the training video thing, and I was shown where stuff was. My co-worker couldn't have been more horrible.
Keep in mind I'm half deaf due to a car accident when I was 5. (Read about that in my other blog, what I'm afraid of) People who are deaf sometimes either speak too loud or too soft. I speak softly. I have ever since then. I had other co-workers constantly ask me what I said and I had to practically scream it at them. I was a hostess so I seated people and worked the cash register. I had a hard time at first, since the system was weird, and the one co-worked I was stuck with every weekend was always giving me a hard time because I was having a hard time. I was new and trying to learn everything. The fourth day of me working there, she started throwing a hissy fit. "You've been here 2 weeks so you should already know to speak loud." Bitch I've been speaking soft my whole life and 4 days is not 2 weeks and that won't change my mannerisms. Go back to school. Of course I didn't say that. I just let her make a fool of herself. Ugh.
Another day I worked, someone from corporate was there and I asked the horrible co-worker who she was. She just said I would know when I saw her. Alrighty then. So I'm up at the register and out of nowhere this devil woman runs up behind me and starts yelling about everything. Also, me being deaf means I can easily be startled and it freaks me out and I can't help but cry sometimes. It's not fun. "YOU'RE PANTS ARE TOO TIGHT! WHY ARE YOU WEARING EARRINGS? BLAH BLAH BLAH"Chill out!!! No one ever said anything about it before that, so I was trying not to have a panic attack.
Once it got to be closer to summer, I let them know I would be about to work an extra day since they were needing someone for a Monday or Tuesday. They said alright and they would let me know.
It was the last week of school and I went into Shoney's on a Tuesday. I asked if I was put down for any other days the following week. They said that I was actually scheduled that day which was not right, since I was still in school that day. It was ridiculous. The next manager they had kept calling me things like "baby" or "babe". I have a name. Use it. So I finally just called in one day and quit. No more stressing over that for me.
And the funny thing is, they shut down permanently a few months ago. The health score was 38 out of 100. What a nasty terrible place that was with terrible people.
So yea...That was my first job. :/
