A few suggestions for houseguests.
#1) Don't burn incense in someone else's house. Or if you really must for some pressing spiritual, life-altering male-cow-pooey, at least ask your hosts if they mind. You know. They might be allergic. Or have smoke detectors. Or be inexplicably averse to incense that smells like something between the house burning down and a skunk spraying all four of your cats in separate sittings, and that hangs so thickly in the air that either explanation seems realistically plausible. Bloody hell.
#2) When your hosts take you out to dinner and the service is horrible, don't interfere with the writing of a reasonable, not mean, note that gives the waiter some suggestions on how she might better serve customers in the future. And especially don't run off with all of our money when we were planning to use some of it tip the hostess and busser separately (but not instead of the waiter) for doing a super excellent job of compensating for a bad waiter. Seriously. It's one thing to disagree with our way of addressing the problem, but it's another thing to prevent us from giving a nice bonus to good staff......in addition ti still tipping a waiter who literally pretended we don't exist.
#3) Do not have really loud conversations at bloody 8am outside of someone's bedroom, and then proceed to blast your homestarrunner soundtrack album, and talk even more loudly over it. You might be surprised to note that it is equally not nice to get up just after your host is finally starting to fall asleep at night, and have really loud conversations, and blast music, and move furniture. The night before they have to get up early for a job interview, after being sleep deprived after being awakened at the bloody crack of dawn by the same antics. General rule of thumb.....unless you see the whole household out of their bedrooms, it's probably a bad time to be bloody obnoxious.
#4) Do not leave the stovetop's gas burner on really low all day while your hosts are at work. Even if you leave it on really low, it's going to make our gasbill skyrocket. And in fact, especially if you leave it on so low that the flame might go out, thereby allowing poisonous gas to seep into our home, killing six animals that we love very much.
If you were to do any or all of these things, one might go so far as to call you a bad guest.....and then one might not want to let you back into their house.....ever again.
You know.....theoretically speaking.....
(Ok, yes, this all happened....thankfully the gas stayed lit, so the cats are fine.)
