Okay, so... not sure if this is a legitimate update, or if this is the ramblings of an inebriated mind, or indeed if there is a difference between the two.
So... I have two big hamburger patties cooking in my frying pan... about a half-pound each. None of this cheap McDonalds 1/4 pounder stuff... a full 1/2 pound each. (Pre-cooking weight, I will admit). This...

It appears that it's time for a somewhat inebriated journal entry. Could be entertaining... could be excruciatingly dull... never know until it's done. I need to finish the research for my thesis in the next month, so it's going to be a hard-core month of research, productivity, and hard work. That was the plan for January as well, but it didn't work out. Alas. Now...

the 'quote' was actually some ramblings that i wrote. i've been struggling with the fact that the bf's dad is an alcoholic and in the past few months, things really went to shit in that arena... the saddest part is that i see what's happening and it's mirroring my mom's dad's life, who was dead at 52 because of his drinking.
so yeah.
less sobering thoughts...yay hiking!

i have enough problems getting work done without distractions. i appreciate your considerate-ness.
Well, 40's okay so far... the first two days, anyway.
Here are a couple of quotes from Umberto Eco's novel "Baudolino":
"The world condemns liars who do nothing but lie, even about the most trivial things, and it rewards poets, who lie only about the greatest things."
"... I am not asking you to bear witness to what you believe false, which would be a...

Maybe the writer wants to be regarded as a great poet.

1.5 hours until tomorrow. I'm turning... 40. 40. Good grief. Where does the time go? Doesn't seem like it's been that long. Mid-life crisis, here I come!! Too bad I can't afford a Harley... a good mid-life crisis really calls for a Harley, don't you think?

happy happy happy birthday!
so many good people in my life have birthdays in january. what a special month! ...and it's funny, you share the day with bush's inauguration (sharing special days is so tiresome...!) have you any intriguing plans for today?
hrmm, the problem i have with investing so much more in schooling is that i am not 100% sure this is really what i want. it's more like a 70/30 split.
maybe we should be given a unique alphanumeric name at birth, something like 2g5h3rt. by doing this we will all remain special at least by one different digit or letter. with this system, names wouldnt have any meaning as you mentioned but name redundancy will be eliminated!

if social secuirty numbers were actually handed out at birth, then they might actually be useful. but you have to "apply" for one. i know of a lot of people who didn't even bother getting their SS numbers until the end of highschool (and they only did because they needed it for college apps).

Edited to say: that was better left unsaid.

thanks, i really enjoy working with the kids. it's only 22 hours a week (2 to 6pm on mon tues thurs and fri and 12 to 6 on wed). yesterday was fun reuniting with all of them again plus some new kids. the problem with a month off is losing routine so i let the kids get away with more than usual. as for me, i am going back to school next week (i'm not sure yet) it depends on whether i pay for the fees by the deadline (end of this week, i think). i dont want to use a credit card to pay for it though but no other choice. after making all the calls for me to actually get back into school and convince them i am a "serious student" (after a year long hiatus), it seems like a waste not too just because of money. i quit the second job i had (the night one mentioned in one of my older entries) and if i hadnt i wouldnt have been able to get away on the minitrip that i just took, so i am again looking for a second job - supplementary income. however, i cannot have a second job if i am going back to school - i dont want to foreclose the possibility of a "good education." i'd like to amend the "school is for suckers" statement above to add that we are only suckers if we think that higher education makes us instantly better off. if only we were all independently wealthy, we could stay in school forever and not even care about the practically of it.

i havent left you a monkey in a while so
I suspect it's all downhill from here. Actually, I suspect it's all been downhill since about 1986.
The new year... a new opportunity to finish my degree, or sink into oblivion... I'll try for the former. We'll see...

Gandalf. Okay... so I've read LOTR a bazillion times (approximately), and watched the movie(s) more than once. So... I just have to say... just what kind of wizard is Gandalf, anyway? In the whole three books, he makes use of actual magic, what... 3 times? Maybe 4? He wrestles with a Balrog... he fends off a few Nazgul with rays of light... c'mon, now!
He's...

If they had made a film of The Hobbit, we would have seen more fireballs. Gandalf set a bunch of pine cones on fire of all different colors and killed some, what were they, Orcs I think.
But still.... pine cones? Surely the Grey Pilgrim can do better than that, eh?
I still don't think he's a lame-ass. He just doesn't like to show off.

shouldn't there be summer solstice in the southern hemisphere during the northern hemisphere's winter solstice or some equivalent of it? this stuff was covered only nominally in middle school, and i forgot it all.

I don't know what to think anymore. Dubya is visiting Canada officially, which I'm not too happy about. I suspect that the "commitment to work together for mutual economic benefit and security" will probably amount to the US government leaning on Canada to do whatever the US wants, as usual.

Bush isnt so bad. The apathy monster has taken up residence with me, and now I just don't really care about any of the fools with authority. They're all the same, they even wear identical ties.
burger patties that aren't circular are SO WRONG! the square burgers at Wendy's are ABSURD.
