the loss of hope, the weight of shame

At one time, folk were properly proud to be American - the 'can do' attitude that built itself out of a depression and made life good for more than it harmed. far from perfect, especially when viewed with our current sensibilities, and that's a fact--but for the times, it was a good thing. Then Vietnam stirred up the hidden poisons never expelled after the Civil War (or as the folk below the Mason Dixon line call it The War of Northern Aggression). Listening to Tim Buckley thinking of the Folk Revolution of the late 50s and early 60s bleeding into the anti-war creative song-writing of the earliest psychedelic era... I am truly saddened by what younger generations lack, what you-all don't even know you lack. There is almost no social consciousness to speak of in the sense of ACTION, nor experimentation nor vision... there are sparks to be sure... but where is the cohesion? where is there a march on Washington every fucking week??? That happened in the 60s. Not once or twice, but week in, week out. while it did nothing to stop the Viet Nam war, it certainly gave the liberals a much stronger voice in politics... and it created a generation - people drawn together out of their apartments, jobs, and into the streets together... until and unless that happens again, the facism in the US of A will only grow and grow and grow. Think it can't happen? keep ignoring history... i'm sure nothing of the past applies now-- NOT. The current American administration has taken Mein Kampf (do you know who wrote it?) as their playbook. I am serious. I have just read it and... the parallels are entirely scary. I say administration and not Trump because there are a lot of folk in on this sickest of jokes... what he doesn't paralyze with fear he stops cold with shame and hopelessness. // We need the musicians, film-makers and writers to get down to business or this country won't live as long as most of you... //

thebeliever:
I believe that the newest generation has shown themselves willing to speak out... Their willingness to do so is an inspiration and a shot in the arm. Ironically, Trump, along with the lack of economic opportunity, will spur more to action; and not only the young people. The evil that has been lying dormant in our country is showing its face again; but I believe the most of us are willing to fight it. This may sound optimistic, which is kind of funny, because I'm anything but an optimist; but I think it's true. I'm with you in that I'd like to see more open, artistic opposition to Trump. Before he's kicked out of office, I want him to feel some of the pain he's inflicted on others, and nothing pains him more than being laughed at.

The outrages just flash by like the cars of a freight train. Before ya can react to 1, several more have come and gone. Truly this is the 'death of a 1,000 cuts'.
