From Time (Pink Floyd: Darks Side of the Moon):

Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today
And then one day you find, ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

And you run and you run to catch up with the sun,
but it's sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time
Plans that either come to nought,
or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone the song is over,
Thought I'd something more to say

I woke up to this song today and the lyrics really sort of struck me. I'm sure it's quite normal for someone my age to have thoughts that they haven't maximized their time. As a kid we always hear the phrase "when I grow up" except we're never really quite sure when that is. It's hard to feel like a grown up at 18 especially if you're going to college and lucky enough to afford regular food.

A few years of that go by and I'm making a little more money and I feel like a kid that got a few extra bucks for his birthday and is buying all the toys he can afford. But when was I suppossed to start? When did my life begin? Why was I scared to embrace my own desires and pursue them with the sort of passion they deserve instead of half-assed?

Maybe this is some sort of cyclical kick in the ass thing I do to myself to keep complacency just a little further away. I've been wasting a lot of time lately and that really starts to wear me down. Well I'm off ......

p.s. the line about quiet desperation being the enlgish way is fucking brilliant!
