Detroit Rock City, indeed.
Drove down Friday, got to my hotel around 10pm, showered, and rolled over to the Magic Stick -- the Bellrays were playing, so I got to see them twice in three nights. Good stuff. Scored free stickers and a button from Lisa, also bonus. Mike and Wendy from the Paybacks were there, threw back a little booze with Mike.
Saturday, the Dally in the Alley street festival. Saw some great tunes -- a cool Middle Eastern band, a Romanian group, Brazilian group -- I do dig me some "world music" at times. Also some great rock and roll, of course -- The Ruiners, The Nice Device, Thunderbirds Are Now, and, of course, The Paybacks topping off the night. Very good stuff, great times were had. Went out and got completely lit at the Lager House after that, where The Fondas were playing. Had to drive John Hentch's van from the bar to a late-night party we hit up, as he was too tanked, then drove it again back to my hotel, before one of his friends took over the wheel to get them back to John's place safely. Highlight there was me taking a corner and John falling over in his seat -- even though he was belted in, he fell to the left, bonked his head on the floor, then righted himself and promptly fell back asleep. He didn't remember it the next day.
Sunday, took it easy at the hotel most of the day, watching motorcycle and car racing on Speed TV. Went over to the Hentch house later to interview Wendy, John, and Mike for the book (which went great, got over 2 hours of convo recorded), then we all rocked a party at a bar called WAB near Mike's place. Drove past 8 Mile street on the way there, which gave me a chuckle. I actually went booze-free last night, since I had the drive home to deal with today and I was hung over all day Sunday, but it was fun all the same just fucking off with that crew.
One other interesting tidbit I learned over the weekend: John and Mike are bowlers; they used to roll league together with a couple other guys. Stellar.
So all right, mission accomplished -- much fun and rock & roll was had, and some book material was harvested.
I hope some of you Chicago people went to see the kick ass shows that were on this weekend that I was unable to attend personally, like the Hideout Block Party and the Mermen show.
And now we return you to your regularly scheduled doldrum....
