Last night felt weird ... walking over to the bar, I felt a lot of nervous energy in the air. Everyone seemed to be nervous and in a hurry. I think it was related to the big thunderstorm that was supposed to come through but never did (which is fine with me, since I was on foot). Got to the bar a little early, watched the last half of the Cubs game. They were up 2-0 early on but blew it at the end, starting with a spectacularly horrifying throw to first by the pitcher that bounced in the dirt about 3 feet in front of the first baseman and popped up over his head. What the hell? Since when can't a pitcher make the distance to first from anywhere in the infield? So, St. Louis ended up winning 3-2.
At some point, a girl sat next to me and started talking to me. I think she might have been the most boring girl in the world. Something about Vegas came up on the TV and so she felt compelled to tell me the following story about Vegas:
"Last year, my parents both retired, and they decided to go on a cross-country retirement road trip. They called me from the road one day about a week before my birthday, and said, 'Hey, we're going to be in Vegas next week. We thought we'd fly you out for your birthday.' So I flew out there for a few days to spend my birthday with my parents in Vegas, but we didn't really do anything. We didn't go to the casinos or shows or anything, we just went hiking and stuff."
Now, what in anyone's wildest dreams causes one to think that this story was worth telling to anybody, much less a stranger in a bar? And this was the most interesting thing she had to say to me, as well.
At any rate, shortly thereafter I had a headache (not necessarily related to excruciatingly boring conversation), so I tabbed out and went home, despite the early (1.30) hour.
Total bar tab:
2 Ace ciders
3 Bushmill's / rocks
1 basket fries
----------------------------
$13
At least that part was nice.
Tonight I think I'm going to skip any bar nonsense that might be going on and just go to Paul's to watch some races he's been saving for me on his TiVo and probably char some meat in the process.
