it's officially summer, and i have a week left at the place where i work. during the summer months i work for the same company, but the location usually changes. i'm pretty excited about this. i get to go back to the place where i spent my first two years with the company and i get to see alot of the same old faces.
every day since january, i have arrived at my work just before 6:30AM. i usually just sit in my car, sip coffee and listen to the radio until my co-worker comes to open up the building. and every day, the same little old man walks down the street, past my car. he always says hello. and i always say hello back and give him a smile. i've seen him on his morning walk through all kinds of weather, but at the same time every day, there he is...one thing is that he's always alone and seems to have sadness in his eyes. when i would see him i would wonder what his life was like. i wondered what kinds of things he had done, and what kinds of things he had seen. i wondered if he had someone, or maybe lost someone. months went by and i still wondered. but i would just say hi as i passed him on my way into the building.
a few days ago, i was running a little late. i still had to get my coffee, but i flew into work that day. i was just about to go inside, and i saw the little old man approaching. he was walking hand in hand with a little old woman. my heart lept out of my chest and a lump formed in my throat. i stopped and waited for them. he saw me and nodded hello. i smiled bigger than i have ever smiled before and said "good morning! how are you two today?" i saw him squeeze her hand just a little. they both smiled and said that they were good. i told them to have a beautiful day and i turned and went to work.
that was a good day.
the little boy and the old man
by shel silverstein
Said the little boy, "Sometimes I drop my spoon."
Said the old man, "I do that, too."
The little boy whispered, "I wet my pants."
"I do that too," laughed the little old man.
Said the little boy, "I often cry."
The old man nodded, "So do I."
"But worst of all," said the boy, "it seems
Grown-ups don't pay attention to me."
And he felt the warmth of a wrinkled old hand.
"I know what you mean," said the little old man.
i feel so extraordinary
something's got a hold on me
i get this feeling i'm in motion
a sudden sense of liberty
