this album has the song that got me into jazz.
the song embodies all of the excitement you feel when you first meet someone you really dig. it expresses the feeling you get with that first kiss. when i hear it, i revert back to junior high when i was on vacation and had my first kiss.
it was all very kevin arnold/winnie cooper
i was sitting outside with a girl. we were in the mountains of san jacinto. i was 15 and i was there with my family for the entire summer. the conversation stopped and the silence took over. i got that nervous feeling that starts in your stomach and then affects your arms and your speech. all i could think to do was count stars. i looked up at the purple sky lit with tiny specks and began..."one, two, three..." she was older and bolder. she said to me, "if you don't stop counting, i'm going to kiss you."
i kept counting.
"...four...five...six..."
She was standing above me. i was sitting. she sat down beside me and cupped my face in her hands and gave me the most gentle kiss i have had to this day. then her mouth opened and mine followed. the number of stars became infinite at that point. astronomy and jazz and love and purpose all intertwined. but i got nervous and pulled away.
when i left, we said we'd keep in touch. but we never did.
the song on that album is Too Young to Go Steady.
