Ok, so, my love of firearms prompted me to go the shooting range yesterday. I always forget how much fun it is. Now, just because I say fun doesn't mean that I think that guns are toys and are not serious. I'm fully aware that they are lethal weapons. There was once a time in my life when I hated guns. I thought all guns should be rounded up and melted down. That the only people who purchased guns were ghetto, backwards hicks, baby killers and/or cowards. I felt that guns were unnecessary and had no place in a civil society. Then it donned on me....

Sure, in a perfect world we wouldn't need firearms, or any weapons for that matter. We also wouldn't need locks on our doors, biotech's trying to find vaccines for deadly diseases, seat belts, or leashes on our babies (BTW, while I'm spouting off my views of things, I think that those leashes that people put on their kids are ridiculous. Hold your kids hand people. It's really not that hard) What I'm getting at, is that it's not a perfect world. Do you honestly think that if the government said, "Hey! screw the second amendment, everyone who owns a gun needs to turn them in immediately (while we keep them in storage, oh and while we're at it we're still going to keep all of our weapons) because this will make us safe", that everyone who owned a gun would do this? No. Why? Because a lot of the people who own guns solely to commit crimes with them are people who purchased them illegally, and they are the ones who will keep them. And, now, if the rest of the law abiding citizens who actually registered their guns are now forced to give them up, do you think the crime rate would go up or down? Common sense. Now, obviously, there's a lot of grey area in this topic that a lot of people seem to look at as black and white. I'm pro gun, yes, however that doesn't mean I'm pro random acts of violence with firearms. But I've done my research on it. That's why I'm pro gun now, when before I wasn't. See, I had never fired a gun, I was scared of it, I knew nothing about them. So I learned. And I went from there. I could have decided that I still didn't like them after learning about them, reading all of the statistics about children accidentelly shooting themselves or the number of suicides that are caused by firearms (which BTW, in 1995 guns were the cause of 1.5% of fatal deaths. 1.5%!! More people died of choking that year). But I didn't, I weighed out the pros and cons (and there's a lot of them, and it's proven to be difficult to find any research that isn't biased one way or the other) and made a conscious and educated decision to accept that guns are apart of my world. And that I can either ignore that, or I can learn to use them and know how to utilize this tool that I've been given. I found that the majority of people I come across who say they hate guns are generally the people who are uneducated about them and fear them. People who may have had bad experiences with them, known people who've died by them. I have, I know people who've died by them, I've had bad experiences with them, it's one of the reasons I wanted so badly to learn about them. That reason, and the fact that the government is slowly taking away our rights and I'm not going to sit idle and watch while they do.
