Well, I'm feeling way better about life in general after a nice long weekend in the woods. Crater Lake is just gorgeous. But like many national parks, you can't get too far off the beaten track and there were a LOT of retirees in tour busses. Still, it was great. After that, we went down to Collier State park (on no gas for almost forty miles as there are no gas stations open late out thataway). Collier was great. It's just outside this silly little town of 750 people, so going into town for ice and bug spray was quite the experience. We stayed in the National Forest, so we had to keep sneaking into the state park at odd hours to use their showers. There was a really slow river running right behind the campsite, so we spent lots of time in inner tubes tied to rocks drifting on the river and drinking beer. There were also some little caves off the road near town that were fun to explore. The weather was great (really clear, especially at night), and the mosquitoes were only bad at twilight. It was very peaceful and just what I needed after last week.

see, the problem with having spent my youth watching assorted video nasties is that as soon as you say "Crater lake" I start imagining scenes involving mutant piranha, cannibal hillbillies, gelatinous blob things under the raft and people stabbing Kevin Bacon thru the neck from under the bed. I take it the reality is not quite that bad, huh
