Friday the 14th of April was my 10th monthiversary since having the patent foramen ovale (PFO) repaired.
I knew that I had to completely restructure the way that I interact with the world. This may seem strange, but when I had no idea what was wrong with me and I was degrading both physically and neurologically, it required me to adapt to survive and functional, not necessarily to be happy.
I had been diagnosed with Bipolar Type I long before I was diagnosed with the PFO, and the medication that I take for my manias successfully treats both my seizures (secondary to the strokes caused by the PFO) successfully. I also take medication to manage tremors that were caused by the strokes, aspirin therapy because of the surgery, and thyroid medication. All of this medication is covered by my insurance.
But my insurance excludes mental health point blank. This means that antidepressants are not covered, and that psychotherapy, behavioral therapy, and psychiatry are all my own expenses.
Problem being: I am still learning how to be happy in this world, and not just survive. I am still learning that everything will be okay. That I am a healthy human being.
