I'm going to keep this short. I've been around a creative industry enough to know that SG's decision to drop certain photographers from their staff was purely economic. After all, why are they going to pay these people more when they can pay non-staff less? Think of it this way, if SG hadn't fired these photographers, they'd probably have jacked up the membership price.
What people are forgetting is that SG isn't some happy fun place that's all about tits and art. It's a business. And, like with any business born out of something creative, the artists who helped make it what it is aren't as important as the bottom line. Don't agree with me? Look at the history of comic books in America. Or ask yourself why there are so many unions in the film industry.
I feel bad for these photographers. They've given a lot to this site and were fired in a particularly humiliating fashion. I like SG a lot less for how they handled this. But I'm not at all surprised. The higher ups need their fancy cars and nice clothes.
