If anyone knows who John McLaughlin is then you can appreciate how ecstatic i am that i got to see SHAKTI tonight. It lit a fire in the base of my spine. Their fusion of Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (South Indian) classical music with a touch of western improvisation produced spinning mandalas of sound.

. Just moved to DC about a month ago...the Indian Classical 'scene'(?) is really thriving up here. I've been studying Indian classical on the sitar (to little artistic avail 
) to try and apply some the pentatonic/microtonalties/1/4 step stuff to my bass playing. I'm amazed how much ragas and the blues scale actually have in common, when you consider the blues "scale" is heavily dependant on specefic syncopation of the accidental notes (at least when its played in the context of a traditional key)....ah well, I digress...was Mclaughin on a fretless Indian Guitar or trad. western electric?

Next time you see old Grim, would you give him my regards? He and I go way back. I do not speak Russian as my vocabulary is limited to about 15 words, but I can read and pronounce words in Cyrillic. All this is due to the fact that my teacher for the one Russian class I took (at PCC) focused entirely on grammar and pronunciation and not at all on vocabulary. I do want to learn it for real some day.
I also had a dashing female acquaintance who was supposedly located in the Ural area, in Perm', though she was also a phantom. It was strictly a cyberspace pseudo-phenomenom. For all I knew she might have been some 400-lb pervert dude his suburban Philadelphia basement wearing the only outfit he owns, a 7XL brown sweatsuit stained with bodily fluids and all manner of snack food and carbonated junk beverages and reeking of rancid putrefication, jacking off to my gushy emails. In fact, for my naive and inexcusable faith in humanity, I hope that's who she was... everybody needs a little attention once in a while.

I don't live on the coast, so I didn't have to worry about flooding where I am. There are a lot more trees down in the city than I first thought. Once you get out of downtown DC, it seems like there's a tree down every four or five blocks. I've been through a tornado warning where one touched down just a few blocks from me and that was much scarier, but I definitely wouldn't want to live on the coast in a hurricane.
