For those of you that wondered what I ended up doing on Sunday, well, I went to the gig, after finding out none of my family actually knew I was coming down for the pre-xmas dinner.
good call I thought - go to the Wasted All-Dayer instead...
which turned out to be the best AND worst decision i've made in the last few months!
(thanks to oak though, because of his constant bugging me about the gig on saturday night, i went along and saw a couple of the best shows i've sen all year!
)
so...from a 12am start at the Astoria on sunday, we got to see a buncha old school punk bands, and very good a bunch of them were (UK Subs, Sham 69, Chelsea). And i must admit Hazel O'Connors performance was a real surprise (she played most of the Breaking Glass album, which made me feel 11 again!)
but there were two extreme standouts - 999 left me reeling, I was surprised how good they were, the quality of their tunes was amazing, and they really looked pleased to be there (unlike Jimmy Pursey) - and obviosuly, in being that excited, put in a bloody great performance.
the biggest standouts however was San Franciscos THE AVENGERS, who have never played in the UK before. They released one album back around 1978. them playing was a major deal for a lot of people...
i remember loving the couple of tracks a friend of mine gave be back in the late 80s - but i never expected them to kick as much major arse as they did on sunday. I was gobsmacked.
i ended up in the moshpit with my mate Rob the Punk Postman...
...who ended up stagediving on me....
Cue monday morning - bruised ribs, bruised everything else, sore feet, back ache...
...and the realisation that sundays gig had quite frankly "FINISHED ME OFF"!
I tried to get off work early, but my boss wouldn't let me (surprise)!
Which brings me to Wednesday, and I'm on the PC, updating you lot, when i should be seeing my band of the year, the awesome NO COMPLY in camden...but the thought of making the trek to Chalk Farm just fills me with dread....
I managed to get to the pub by sutton station to meet my mate - I had one beer, and then turned round and came back here...
So the gig killed me...but i did get to see Eddie Tenpole Tudor playing "Swords Of A Thousand Men" to 2000 pissed up punks (most over the age of 30) on sunday...
sleep well everyone...I know I will...
