The studio is new and it isn't mine. It opened over the summer. It's owned by a good friend of mine that I used to intern with at Kingsize Sound Labs here in Chicago. So I am one of the freelance engineers there and my recording partner and I get a sweetheart deal on the rate. The owner's partner is an equipment broker who flies around the world buying and selling world class gear. So according to the partner, the Neve we have is "ok" but he's going to get us a better one. Uh, ok, sure. Probably put two 80 series together to give us one big one. The mic collection is incredible but, because they also buy, sell and rent, you can go into a session expecting to use something and it's gone.
The space is pretty incredible. It was built in the 70's for a studio called Zenith/DB. In the late 80's through the 90's Columbia College used it as their facility for the audio department. He and I both teach recording there and he was the College's studio manager. When they moved out last summer, he took over the space. It's over 9000 sq feet and has 8 rooms. Right now, just the big live room and one of the mix rooms is up and running. They put in a Calrec for another mix room, but it's not all put together yet, and are almost done with a V/O Pro Tools mix room.
I've wroked in jingles and now I do post production but am going for a job at the public radio station WBEZ to run their recording studio. One of my best friends I grew up with works there so I think I have a good shot. Anyway, as a result I work with bands once a month. But, I only work with friends or music I like so it's kind of ideal. Steady work during the week, rock sessions that I enjoy on the weekends.
I'm sure you haven't heard of any of the bands I've worked with. Though the studio owner has worked with The Redwalls (used to be the Pages), Andrew Bird, some of the guys from Wilco and a whole list of others.
The project I am on now is a band called Indian. They are a sludge/stoner rock band. They use a standard tuning but from B instead of E. We tracked two weeks ago, are suppossed to do some PT editing today, and mixing next month. 6 songs, 4 reels, 52 minutes. 9.72 gb's once we transferred into PT.

I have a home setup for my own stuff, but that consists of a Digi 001, a G4, Soft Sample Cell, Reason, a MIDI keyboard, a bass, a guitar, a Pod, a Distressor and an sm57. I've never been into buying gear if I'm just freelancing because I figure I can always beg, borrow, or steal whatever I need.
Whew! That's the scoop. I realized after posting in the group that I might sound like I was bragging. I'm not, I'm just lucky to have access to this space and gear. Anyone is free to book the studio, though not everyone will get the rate I get.
