Angus took his lunch standing up at Lexington and 28th, across from the 6 train. Angus worked hard underground as an electrician for the subway and he cherished these moments in the sun, reenergized by the emerging spring season. He took a few bites from a cold piece of pizza and tossed it aside. People nudged and bumped into him as he stood there, but Angus didn't seem to notice.
Annabelle worked the jewelry counter at a tattoo studio in the lower east side and hated everything about it. She had graduated from RISD five years ago and wondered if she would ever be able to pay her rent on time. Annabelle sat on the 6 train, eating a cheese sandwich and reading a book, as suits and cell phones and shopping bags swirled around her.
Annabelle ascended from the subway like an angel into the light. Angus grew a few inches. He took a couple of quick steps forward but Annabelle was already jogging and they collided, embracing, under a tree sprouting the first flower blossoms of spring.
There is something like an aura of hope that permeates the city in the spring, caressing the brownstones and cracked sidewalks with a gentle sun and warm breeze. The city seems a kinder place as nature seeps through the walls that we have built up around ourselves. It is a place where love is sometimes quite literally written across the chests of young couples kissing shamelessly in the street.
