When I was growing up, I never understood those dumb cliche type statements. Did anyone ever say to you, "It never rains, but it pours"? I mean, proverbs make no sense to an overprotected 9 year old
The older I get, the more I really understand those things. Like today. Despite my best wheedling, cajoling, and, let's face it, attempted guilt tripping, I was faced with "Mario lunch" refusals from every quarter. Deanna can't get off work. Denise can't find anyone to watch the kids (her usual babysitter had surgery today). Angie's in New York for her job, Greg's in St Louis for his, even my mom has to work that day. I was out of options. So, accepting defeat, I called and set my reservation at Lidia's for 1, and I was at least content. Then my mom calls. "I'll take off work and watch the kids if Denise wants to go. If not, I'll go with you." Fine, whoever wants to go, that's great, yay, I don't have to go alone! I called back. Increased my reservation to 2.
Then I checked my email.
Deanna can get a couple of hours off on Wednesday. We're on!
Greg will move his meeting in St Louis to Friday. Italian sounds good, and it's been so long since we spent any time together!
Angie...well, she's still going to be in New York, but she's willing to hang around Babbo or Esca to see if she can catch that Mario guy and have him sign a book for me. (Because, you know, it's *that* easy
I love Angie, but for being so incredibly smart, sometimes she's a ding-dong.)
So, I told Angie, "It's ok. I'm going to Lidia's anyway, so no need to stalk on my behalf. Thanks for the offer though!"
I told Greg, 'Don't go to any trouble, I've got a lunch companion.' The answer: "Oh, that's good, because moving this meeting would cause all sorts of drama, but I'd have done it for you." Aww. So sweet, my Greg
I told Deanna, "Denise is going. Still interested?" Answer: "YES!"
I called Lidia's again and talked to the same host as the first two times. She laughed when I told her I needed to up my reservation again and said that they only have 3 seats left, am I sure she shouldn't hold a couple extra for me just in case?
The dining companion downpour is now officially over.
So, if any of you were planning to sneak to KC and surprise me with lunch at Lidia's, it's too late now. I'm not calling her back again
I GET TO SEE MARIO!

Oh the pain. I think they set a record this year. Apparently when you have a problem with a bagpipe you are supposed to blow one piercing sound for at least a minute while another bagpiper stares at the pipe in question and pokes it once and a while!
