Surprise parties are always tricky. My brother threw one for his wife where everyone was invited to this big Event, and at the time she was happy enough to go along with it. But she has said since that she wishes it had just been a nice dinner with closer friends and family, rather than everyone making a big deal about her 30th.
Would your friend be more comfortable in a casual setting, like a backyard kind of deal? It could be a surprise BBQ party.
