Went to the interview and it was your general health history, eating habits as a child and eating habits as a teenager. She asked me what motivated me to do this and I was kind of stumped. I like myself as a whole person and I'm not one of those girls who says "I hate (insert body part here)". I mean, I'm doing this so 5 years from now I'm not diagnosed with diabetes or cancer or heart disease and then I thought... I'd like to be able to walk into any store that I want to and buy clothing. I'd like to shop from the little gothy handmade stores and online. Being my size, I buy my clothes from 4 places and I settle for whats there since I can't find the things I like. I want to be able to shop in the CHEAP places too. I spend an inordinate amount of money on shit thats not the best quality but fits me. I am both interested in my health and very shallow at the same time.
Then we went to the class which was pretty nice. We didn't get into the food thing though. She spoke on the past, the present and future. She listed 4 things that have us and the American society in the predicament that its in. One, we have become inactive. She made a point in distinguishing between BUSY and Active. We are all very busy, but we are busy sitting and standing, not running or lifting. Second, she brought up refining sugar. Pre-1900's it's believed that the average american consumed 5 pounds of sugar, per year. At that time diabetes was virtually nonexistent. In 1992, a study claimed we consumed about 150 pounds per year, and they estimate that we consume nearly 200 pounds of sugar per person, per year and I'm sure as you all know, diabetes is pretty high up on the list of diseases that many americans have. FYI: We also created sugar in a bottle around this time, i.e. soda. The third thing, was the refining of wheat around the same time. In refining wheat for those lovely things like cake, donuts and pastas... we lose 90% of its nutritional value. Finally, she spoke on the advent of Convenient food. We have every kind of fast foods, curbside pick ups, and plenty of other conveniences in the kitchen. More convenience, less activity.
Also, it has been noted that the amount of food many people eat in one sitting used to feed an entire family. Our portions are 75% greater than they were in the past.
She then spoke on the way that women gain weight.
1) Pregnancy. On average you gain 10 pounds per child and the easiest way to get rid of it is by breast feeding.
2) A half a pound per month for life.
She said that to remind us that for some you'll lose weight at the same rate as well. It took you years to put it on and will take years to get it all off.
The last part of class was really quite great. She spoke on how society came up with this idea that eating fat, makes you fat. In front of us, we saw the 1987 food pyramid. Fats at the top, dairy and meats, fruits and veggies and bread.
If you look at it, it makes NO sense. Most food that is low in fat is high in sugar, which takes you back up to the problems of having too much sugar and not enough protein in ones diet. The egyptian culture used a similar style of eating and following the same kind of food pyramid, eating the best KINDS of food in each area of the pyramid and scientists have stated that they had the same health problems that the American society have now.
and... the rest will be tackled next week.
