Ideologically I agree with you - actually, wholeheartedly I agree with you....realistically however, not so much. Teaching in the NYC public schools makes "don't smile until Christmas" a necessity...it's rather sad. Mostly the reason why I left teaching in the public sector and am now looking for something a bit different...

Kudos to you for making what you believe in work. If only it worked for all of us - though I will continue to try!!

Please continue to try and keep smiling. They need it, more than they realize. I know that I am able to get away with more than some (6'6" and 240 lbs) so kids pay attention to me since I am not small. However, they respond, even those who roll their eyes and are too-cool-for-school, they respond. Am I naive? Probably. Will I stop? I certainly hope not. I have taught in different states and different countries and I have discovered that kids want to be adored, they want to be loved and they want to drive you crazy, all at the same time.

Please, don't give up, on teaching and on them. They need you. Have I taught in New York? No. I say again, am I naive? Without a doubt.
