Soundtrack: Strain, "Everything's Impossible"

We had an old friend over for dinner last night. Not "old" as in "like 60", "old" as in "haven't seen her for about eight years". She brought her girlfriend - the two of them just bought a house. I made Long Life noodles and fish, cocktails and tea and mochi. Three hours evaporated, just like that.
I get wrapped up in the long view sometimes. I brood over the myriad afflictions bestowed on me by my government. I fret over the seeming ignorance and bigotry of my fellow human beings. I wonder if, in eight years, I will still have this house and this computer and enough food to eat, or whether I will be one of those miserable souls in the bread-line pictures from the 1930s.
I forget that my life is made up of little, friendly things as well as big, scary ones. A delightful dinner doesn't fix the horrific problems I worry about, but it's just as important in the overall scope of my life. Reconnecting with an old friend matters just as much as Bush's foreign policy. I need to remember to get each end of the spectrum in equal measure.
