Some fun facts about the city I live in!

Blog homework time! Thanks again for the constant blog inspiration @missy, @rambo, and @lyxzen. This weeks topic got my inner history nut going, apologies if I give you flashbacks to high school history/geography classes.

Like every Australian city not located on the east coast my hometown Adelaide is often disregarded as boring by people. Those people are both boring and wrong. In truth Adelaide is a lady. A lady who isn't going to waste her time with some schmucks, she's gonna make you work for it. Get to know her and she'll show you a good time.

I could go on but I don't want to ramble so here are some quick fun facts!

1) The middle city.
Want to pop over to your friends in Adelaide's closest neighbouring capital city Melbourne? Enjoy your 654 km (406 mi) road trip! It takes about 8-9 hours. Or you could turn around and head to the west coast, only a quick 2,130 km (1,324 mi) / 28 hour drive to Perth.

2) We've got balls. Big ones.
Possibly the most iconic landmark in Adelaide is "the mall's balls". A sculpture located in the centre of the city's main shopping precinct Rundle Mall.

3) The City of Freedom
Unlike other capital cities Adelaide was not settled by convicts. Founded in 1836 and named after King William IV's queen consort, Adelaide of Saxe-Meiningen, the city was planned to be a home for free British settlers in Australia. Adelaide soon became known for it's religious freedom and political progressivism. To this day Adelaide is still colloquially known as "The City of Churches" due to the number of different religious groups that moved in and built their own houses of worship.

Alright I am going to wrap up there, maybe I'll do a bigger blog in the future about my favorite things to do and see in Adelaide. I am definitely going to catch a train into the CBD this week and spend some time just enjoying where I live. Thanks for reading x
