When I was 19 I bought On The Road, by Jack Kerouac. As I was reading it I could feel a shift from the before to the after. It was one of the most amazing books I've ever read in my entire life. It had energy, was spontanious, riviting, and touched me the way no other book ever has since. It began my lust for travel. It began my love of writing. It will forever be a classic in my eyes.
Since then I have done a ton of traveling. My road atlas is just about falling apart. I've been to every state on the East Coast, to every state on the West Coast and a whole bunch in between. I've been to Scotland, England, Wales, and Ireland. Just in this past year alone I've been to 10 different states, and I still have a few major trips planned. It's been a huge benefit to know members of SG all over the country who help hook me up with places to stay and keep the expense down.
That's really the biggest misconception about traveling I find. People think it's expensive. Oh, it can be, but that's really up to how thrifty you are. I admit most people aren't as fortunate as I am to be able to travel by train for free, but aside from the cost of getting where you want to go the only other major expenses are food and shelter. If you were to talk about SG Events in general many of the bigger parties have carpools and hotel sharing threads. That drastically reduces two out of the three costs right there.
Some people don't feel they have the time to go on trips all over the place. Most of the time I'm only go away for a long weekend, but I can't tell you how nice it is to get away. To meet new people or hang out with old friends. I always feel so refreshed after getting out of my neck of the woods. Going other places and seeing what's out there. I often come home feeling completely different than I did when I left. Having a renewed energy and focus.
It troubles me when I hear that some people never get to travel much, or think that they can't afford it. It takes some creativity and fore thought, but it's worth it. There's a big 'ole world out there just waiting to be explored.
