CONSTANTLY CHANGING PATTERNS
I
Love
Strange
Dreams
25 times a day.
I've tried to paint them for us to share.
Layered patterns,
constantly changing.
Like a low groove bassline
you don't want to end.
I can't stop the repition.
Days blur one into another.
Dancing around to "Fool's Gold."
It all began so innocently, Baltimore.
Seeing faces in window panes.
Laughing.
Clouds passing on postcards,
stairs sinking beneath my feet,
the vapors filling my nose.
And even if we weren't
going to get any action
I would have been content
to stay at Natasha's apartment.
She was the kind of girl
who didn't need an answering machine.
Who left her panties
carefully scattered on the bathroom floor.
She had beautiful small breasts
and an asian look about her.
Something in her eyes.
But Jay said he had to have orange juice.
Take my advice, never go into a 7-11
where the clerks moustache turns into a caterpillar.
Outside, relieved, fresh air.
The "Spare some change, man" waits.
Two white kids in an unpopular neighborhood
being chased by words with 7 letters in them.
Double back, hide in the alleyway,
an endless freight train passes overhead.
Senses heightened, amplifing every sound.
Boxcars, hoppers, screech and streach to their limits.
I had to piss,
and Jay said, "Don't do it , man."
"Didn't you see 'Boyz 'n the Hood? ' "
But life is not like a movie,
at least not mine.
Snuck down the tracks
on the bikes we swiped out the back of a van.
The adreneline pumping,
we could have riden all the way to North Carolina.
But we ended up in Timonium,
where his girlfriend lived.
Broke in through the window,
trying not to wake her.
She was a cute little redhead
that did scripted phone sex for a living.
Pregnant with Jay's seed
she lie there naked in bed
as I snuck past to use the bathroom.
Strange birds began singing
their morning sunrise song,
keeping the sleep from coming.
Or was it something else?
the pins, the tingling numbness.
The thoughts that won't stop racing
around inside.
What devil dreamt up this torture?
It only cost five bucks,
but what a price to pay for a little fun.
