YOU know what really irritates me?

What irritates me more than I can even describe is when I go into a place like a hardware store, auto parts store, or in the case today a lawnmower parts store, and get condescended to. Like I'll come in and ask for a throttle control thingy and the guy will look at me incredulously and say, "Are you going to try and fix this yourself?" and then rolls his eyes and hands me the card for his repair guy in the back. WHAT THE FUCK!! I go shopping with my brother now and then, NOT ONCE has anyone asked HIM that. Not ONCE, but I go by myself or with my girlfriends and BAM, that question. We have started to get bitchy or sarcastic as of late because it really is getting to that point. I'm 30 years old, I'm older than my brother, I learned about fixing things from my dad and I had a few more years to learn than he did. I know I'm weak and girly, but seriously, HOW FUCKING HARD DOES HE THINK IT IS TO CONNECT A NEW THROTTLE CABLE TO A TILLER?? Two small screws and a little routing. Oh NO! I told him I was sure even with my feeble mind I would be able to manage.

It got ugly though, because I was already put off by his tone to start with when he asked "the question" and then I don't have a model number for my tiller, it seriously does not have one, it did have one, but it was printed on it and the sun bleached it off completely. I traced a diagram, brought in the remaining piece of the part and took a whole bunch of pictures of the thing on my phone. It wasn't like I came in unprepared. He suggested I bring it down and let his guy do it for me, since I didn't have the model number. I was like I brought you everything you should need to find out what model it is. But no, If I bring it down they will magically know, despite the numerous photos and tracings. I explained that I own a small car which is not suitable for hauling a tiller around in. He seemed frustrated when I asked if he couldn't look the thing up based on the photos I had. So I asked if I could look through his catalog until I found it, they only made 3 models of tiller per year and only one front tine one per year, how long would I really have to look the tiller is only 4-10 years old. The catalog is on one of many computer terminals there in the store. The catalog is a proprietary thing, not available online and he no longer keeps paper catalogs. I was not rude to him at all. He then said, well, missy (and I HATE being called that) why don't you go home and come back when you know your model number. I just looked at him and grabbed my purse and phone and papers with tracings and started to leave and he had the nerve to call after me, "Don't you want your air filter and spark plug?" I looked back and was like "Are you fucking KIDDING me? No thank you, not from you douchbag." And I left. I really can't believe people sometimes.

it's to bad that this shit is so prevalent. On a sinilar note when I go to JoAnn fabric the ladies treat me like an idiot who couldn't possibly sew since I'm male OR like i'm there to rape em, it's just crazy at this late date, these gender stereotypes are SO prevalent. and if man sews he must be a femme or if a woman is mechanical she must be butch,Hell I was taught to weld by one of the most feminine girls I've ever met, & i'll never be as good as she is at it!!!! shocked

sorry, i totally ranted in your journal, but these things PISS ME OFF!! smile

Yeah, I've had that kind of thing happen to me and some friends about being girls with sailboats.

There are people amazed that I can sail my boat by myself.

One of my friends, (who is the sole owner of her boat), got what we call the "little miss" treatment when she brought her boat into the marina... She kept having men standing around watching her do work to her boat... and heard them talking about her... and offering to help, but in that nasty condescending way, where they make it clear that a "Little Miss" should do stuff like that, just go get us some food and beers...

Grrrrrr.....
ARRR!!!
