I know, I know, I'm a non-updating, non-journal-commenting dick. But between extra hours at work and Star Wars Galaxies and, well, even more Star Wars Galaxies, I've hardly even looked at the site for about three weeks.
Other things I've been doing recently:
1. Trying to figure out whether the new Mars Volta album, Deloused in the Comatorium, is interestingly complex, or just obnoxiously messy, and trying to figure out ways to describe it to people who haven't heard it. My first impression was of Fugazi fronted by Geddy Lee and with occasional guitar by Carlos Santana. I know that sounds hideous, but it definitely works in large chunks; I'm just not sure if the album has enough structure to carry the weight of all the experimentation going on. It's kind of latin-rock/hardcore/theatrical/surrealist-operatic/prog-rock/punk/jam-band stuff. Maybe. And ambient too, sometimes. They've also taken the surrealist lyrics to the point of complete meaninglessness (whereas At the Drive In's lyrics occasionally do in fact mean something). One thing's for sure, these guys really like latinate words, and they have a big honkin' thesaurus.
2. Just finished "Darwin's Dangerous Idea" by Daniel Dennett, which is the best non-fiction book I've read in at least the last five years. My highest reccomendation; everyone should read this book, especially those of you who have niggling doubts about evolutionary theory or are still clinging to Descartes. He clears it all up, and I mean *all*. Pretty dense, but awfully readable as well. Popular books about science and philosophy are usually lame (as if they were written for 12 year olds), but this one is unusually rigorous yet clear.
3. And then there's Star Wars Galaxies. The first MMORPG I've played that hasn't bored the hell out of me, because it's really deep and there's always something new to do. I am going to be wasting a lot of time with this game in the coming years. There should definitely be a suicidegirls guild, too. Anyone know if anyone's started one?
