So this weekend saw the NHL All-Star game, and the Pro-Bowl, and wow have these games changed in the last decade or so. Hell even the last five years. I miss the times where the best actually played like the best. When Wayne Gretzky scored four goals in an All-Star game (one period for that matter) it was amazing, the fact that Marion Gaborik nearly accomplished the same feat this year was abhorrent because there was ZERO effort on defence and the goalies (with the exception of Tim Thomas) mailed it in.
The commentary guys, the colour guys, and even the analysts between periods seemed to be disinterested in what was going on. They were more concerned with the upcoming trade deadline, and Sidney Crosby's injury updates. Gone it seems are the days when players played for the pride of their teams, back when it was Whales and Campbell Conferences, or East, West. I wont include the North America versus the World games because those games were the highest scoring least competitive games ever. Even worse than what went on last night.
Now I did mention the Pro Bowl, I only saw highlights so I can only judge based on those, but looking at the score and everything else, yeah other than that one outstanding catch for a touchdown that will be on highlight reels forever, looked pretty horrible.
In short, if you're an All-Star play like one, you earned the right to be there, you get a bonus for playing in them, the fans want to see you play like an All Star, and when at least one third of the arena audience has left by the 10 minute mark of the third period..... YOU'VE DONE SOMETHING HORRIBLY WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is all
